I knew the bride when she used to rock and roll. . . that's how the song goes, but actually, I knew her from high school, in our small (mostly Dutch West Michigan Protestant small school). After she received my name from her girlfriends and from the church, she wondered if I was the same one from high school. I was happy to hear that Charlene had found her soul mate, and the wedding was going to be a simple, yet elegant affair. I knew this couple had a sense of sophistication, style and grace, and my job as a photographer was to capture the fun moments and stylish reception.
Charlene and Joe had their wedding ceremony at Fourth Church, and this Michigan Avenue church is a classic piece of architecture, with tall cathedral ceilings, making you feel small compared to God.
They selected a multi-colored palette of purples, blues, pink, and each junior bridesmaid and flower girl carried a different bouquet. The groom hired a magician to entertain guests during the cocktail hour. The bride surprised her groom by changing into a different white, feathery skirt, which was the perfect fashion statement for the tango as the first dance. On the way to the reception, I actually said out loud, “it's obvious to me how happy you'll be together”. Cheers.
